The sound of the film

As you can probably guess by the title, I've spent the last couple of days trying to create the score of the film. I know that realistically I won't get all of these songs, but there's no harm in dreaming!

I started off with an initial plan to just find a song to fit the intro and a sing to fit the credits. Originally Salt by Bad Suns was the Intro song, and Silence Is Easy by Starsailor was going to be for the credits. However, I then started to think well... what if I could soundtrack this the way I want? How would I do it? And thus, the Definitive Times Soundtrack was created.

All the songs fit with the moment they accompany, with the majority being about being transgender, living as something you're not, or having lyrics that can be interpreted this way. A few songs I'd especially recommend listening to (while also reading the lyrics) to get the idea of the film are:

  • I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme) - John Rzeznik, Treasure Planet Soundtrack (I'm a boy—no, I'm a man, They can't break me, as long as I know who I am)

  • Silence Is Easy - Starsailor (the bravery of coming out, silence would've been the easy option)

  • No Matter What - Calum Scott (how my parents took the news)

  • When I Was a Boy - Dar Williams (track of my childhood)

  • Reflection - Lea Salonga, Mulan Soundtrack (not understanding why I was different)

  • Body Was Made - Ezra Furman (it's my body, I have the right to change it to match my gender)

  • All These Things That I've Done - The Killers (note the lyric is son not sun)

  • Salt - Bad Suns (sums up the whole film, hence why it's the credits - want the lyrics to be listened to without visual distraction)

The only part I'm still working on is the song that plays while giving a bit of background to my family - We Are Family by Sister Sledge is so cliché, and so currently serves as a placeholder for Chapter 2 while I find something more fitting.

Edit 21/2/2022: A more fitting song has been found - Family Man by Fleetwood Mac:

Walk down this road

When the road gets rough

I fall down

I get up

I am what I am (Am what I am, I am what I am, am what I am)

A family man (A family man)

I am what I am (Am what I am, I am what I am, am what I am)

A family man (A family man)

Mother... father... brother

Mother... father... brother

The lyrics suit the chapter, and the film as a whole, perfectly! I couldn't have found a better choice.
