Ashton Blyth

Born in 1998 in Horsham, Ashton Blyth's practice explores growing up as female and his journey to understanding that his gender identity did not align with the sex that he was assigned at birth. Through his artwork, Blyth aims to challenge the rules and restraints society lays out for us in regard to personal identity - “because they should be challenged, broken down and reformed in new ways to represent the constant evolution of identity in society”.

Throughout the years of his education in the arts, Blyth has developed his skills in a variety of mediums: drawing, printmaking, sculpture, animation and film. Blyth’s preferred method of creation being to combine several mediums to build an installation that the audience can participate or immerse themselves in. Blyth believes these methods have proven invaluable in improving audience understand of his work and its significance.

Choosing to convey his themes through mediums that best serve his contexts, led Blyth to learn the art of traditional hand-drawn rotoscope animation. Capturing a childhood memory exploring his gender expression, his award-winning debut short film Felt Right Then, Feels Right Now earned him a place in Bloomberg’s New Contemporaries 2022 lineup.

Ashton Blyth - Outside of the Ferens Gal

Reflecting on the definitive times in his life that have contributed to understanding his gender, Blyth continued to rotoscope these moments digitally. However, the discovery that he had been removed from the NHS Leeds Gender Identity Centre waitlist four years prior - without notice - halted the exploration into his past.

Changing the course of his final year, with Blyth choosing to focus on how his medical transition had been impeded, led to the creation of The Transition Tube Map. Utilising the universally understood format of Transport for London’s Tube Map, with the intention of providing other current and future patients with a clear understanding of the system, The Transition Tube Map is a visual guide to the support and medical interventions available through the NHS Gender Identity Services.

Providing the framework for his final project, Definitive Lines, Blyth has visually documented his own medical transition with both the NHS Leeds Gender Identity Clinic and GenderCare in London.
