Defining Self

We all choose our gender(s), sexuality(ies) and religion(s) - society may impact us, but ultimately these labels are ours. Defining Self depicts the overwhelming effect that societies’ categorisation has on us and how it forces us to categorise ourselves, effecting us both mentally and physically.

Not only does society force us into boxes, but it also limits the amount of choices we have; the figure is collaged in lists of all known gender identities, sexualities and the top twenty practiced religions globally. Each list also includes the option of ‘Other’ and ‘Prefer not to say’, to emphasise that even though the lists include all known categories, that does not mean that everybody will identify with one or more of them.
