My Transition Tube Map - Drawings 5

After my tutorial with Jonathan, where we discussed my plans for the show, I needed to re-think the layout of my map. Having a film of me creating a large-scale tape map on a TV would be landscape, and so having the roll of paper pinned to the wall that extends on to the floor in portrait balances the display and the interaction of the works.

So for this I need to rework the map so it is understandable when portrait. I started this by imagining rotating my section of the map from my previous drawing 90 degrees anti-clockwise, which would mean my NHS section would be at the top with the lines coming out to the right and going up, with the private section underneath with the lines coming out to the left and up. However, I did not want it to appear as though the private section was going backwards when that is where the most rapid progress happened overall.

Rather than just rotate it, I decided to mirror-flip it, so that the NHS section would be appearing backwards if any. This made me consider whether I should be including the backward steps in the axis, rather than just stating 'progression', which does not necessarily indicate a retrogression where lines go down -just a lack of progress.

Working with the image as portrait, aligning the NHS standard map created this clear middle divide to the overall map - for the NHS standard map that is whether you are wanting to become more masculine or feminine physically. This created an opportunity to highlight the backwards steps in my transition while under the NHS, adding 'Retrogress' onto the axis.
