Initially I decided that if the line and stops would be exactly the same for the treatment of a male as they were for female, what was the point in repeating it on both sides? And so decided to try drawing the map in a way that, if the line would come out one side, the station was still accessible for all and anyone could get on.
But as someone who struggles with processing, I look at this larger map and read it as the hormone line is only accessible from masculinity, and voice therapy is only accessible through femininity, because they fall on the side closest to that line.
I also made the same mistake again, as I was referring back to my previous map, of having top surgery positioned directly opposite laser hair removal – only this time I drew it as top surgery is accessible from the non-binary main line, but laser hair removal isn’t. This definitely affirmed my previous realisation that having the two opposite, as though they’re the same level in accessibility, doesn’t work when they're very different things with requirements.
I drew the top surgery line in the same way as I’d drawn the lower surgery line on the previous diagram (‘The feminising (?) options section’), based on my experience of the care pathway.
Referring back to the Leeds pamphlet I realised that a key difference in the upper and lower surgery process is you need two positive recommendations for lower surgery, as opposed to the one needed for upper, and that’s a key difference I need to make clear. So I started the lines and got this far before I realised I actually needed to research the different surgical options, that lower is a broad category, before I could finish off this diagram (full diagram image in next post 'Gender affirming surgeries section').
And is it confusing to have both lower surgeries connected? When they are complete opposites? When thinking about my colour choices, I had been thinking about just having the one line for lower surgery, whatever that lower surgery was, but this is making my realise that this definitely wouldn’t have worked.
Overall, just this one diagram has been immensely helpful and clarifying for my design choices! It made me think about the map as a whole, and how busy/complicated areas would appear depending on where I placed certain stations.
